Set up in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain name extension is the only one planned for personal web pages only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are known by. Initially, just 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you desired to acquire john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level names remained functional.
